Adoption and Orphan Care

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. James 1:27 (NIV)

In looking after the orphans in their distress, recent research has been proven very successful in helping foster/adoptive parents build an attachment with children that enter their lives.  The following pieces of information are crucial in understanding the behaviors of children and knowing how to respond accordingly when developing a caring relationship.

  1. Trust Based Relational Intervention - Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross, www.child.tcu.edu
  2. Theraplay®, a registered trademark of The Theraplay Institue - Dr. Ann Jernberg, www.theraplay.org
  3. Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics© - Dr. Bruce Perry, www.childtrauma.org

Adoptive family camps for foster/adopt families in the Houston area have been developed as part of the adoptive family ministry of Houston’s First Baptist Church. If you would like more information about these camps, please email mary@bless_families.org.

In addition, online webinar modules are available for foster/adopt families and provide a better understanding of the emotions and responses one may personally experience as a result of difficulties in dealing with a traumatized child. These modules are based on the most current research regarding neurosequential development and the methods needed to interact with traumatized children. The module courses included are: Developing a Connection, Developing Self-Regulation, Attachment-Based Play, Connecting and Correcting, and Connecting Through Playfulness. The goal is to help parents develop a better understanding of each child’s particular relational needs and to equip with the means to make daily choices that are beneficial to developing a more effective parent/child relationship. Total cost for all five modules is $50, and all participants will receive a manual that corresponds with the material presented, for the modules to be incorporated into daily parenting.
